LaGrange takes top spot in wrestling tourney

LAGRANGE – The LaGrange Grangers took care of business.
Competing in the 13-team Gary Silva Invitational at Gardner Newman Middle School, the Grangers had nine wrestlers finish third or higher and they rolled to the tournament championship.
LaGrange finished with 186 points to take the top spot, and Leeds (Ala.) finished second with 151 points.
Chattahoochee County (116 points), Bowdon (113 points) and Callaway (111 points) rounded out the top five.
It was an impressive performance for Callaway, which had three individual champions as well as a third-place finisher.
LaGrange’s lone champion was Guy Wegienka at 195 pounds, who has now won three consecutive tournament titles.
Finishing second for LaGrange were Colt Creed, Matt Watford, Jordan Ragan and Richard Gaskin.
Luke Haynes, Kane Shirey and Quindon Dunson each finished third for LaGrange.
For Callaway, Justin Kiss continued his superb sophomore season by winning his third tournament championship.
Andrew Thomas and Matthew Wingate also claimed the top spot in their respective weight divisions.
Khaliq Swift added a third-place finish for Callaway.
Troup’s varsity wrestling team was in Fayette County for a two-day tournament that wrapped up on Wednesday.
Jeremiah McClendon and Brantly Robinson each finished fourth, and Chase Seals and Steven McClendon had fifth-place finishes.
