LaGRANGE — A local business man and Troup County native is slated to run for Troup County tax commissioner in the May 24 primary election; the winners of partisan primary elections will face general election in November.
William “Bill” Hunnicutt said in a press release he plans to seek the office and hopes his experience in business will aid in the effective management of the county’s tax collections.
“My business background and years of experience dealing with loans, real estate and tax-related issues make me uniquely qualified for the tax commissioner position,” Hunnicutt stated.
Hunnicutt is challenged by Shane Frailey, a local law enforcement officer and Troup County native. The current tax commissioner, Gary Wood, is not seeking re-election. Neither candidate has filed a declarations of intent with the Troup County Board of Elections and Registration as of this morning, and qualifying begins March 7.
Hunnicutt is currently the vice president of sales and operations for File & Records Management, a LaGrange firm that provides companies with records management, storage and shredding services. Prior to that, he was part owner of Professional Lending, a mortgage company, for 14 years.
Hunnicutt started that business at age 27, and grew it to a 50-employee company located in three states. Professional Lending consolidated with Southeast Mortgage in 2011.
He is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in marketing.
Hunnicutt has also volunteered as executive director of the Troup Titans Soccer Club for the past three years. Over that period, he has reorganized the club and expanded the program from about 30 athletes to now more than 120, consisting of eight teams for ages 9 to 15. Hunnicutt’s interest of soccer began when he helped to form and participated as a player on LaGrange High School’s first soccer team.
A member of First Baptist Church on the Square, Hunnicutt teaches Sunday school and has worked with Hope for Honduras mission trips.
Hunnicutt is the grandson of William Oliver Hunnicutt Jr, who coached football at LaGrange High School. His father is a retired LaGrange dentist and his mother Gail Hunnicutt is a community volunteer.
Hunnicutt’s wife, Karyn, is a pediatrician at LaGrange’s Children’s Clinic. She grew up in the Rosemont area and graduated from Troup High School. They have three children: Will, 16; Harrison, 14; and Davis, 12.
