LaGRANGE — A local civic organization is slated to host a workshop on the prevention of financial abuse of senior citizens.

The Rotary Club of LaGrange is set to host the workshop, titled “Preventing Elder Financial Abuse,” at the Vernon Woods Retirement Community on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The event, sponsored by Calumet Bank, is free and open to the public.

“All members in our club have already committed to helping with the program of Preventing Elder Financial Abuse in our communities,” said Ann Bledsoe, a Rotarian and organizer of the workshop. “We are hoping the citizens and businesses in our area embrace our mission and help us.”

The workshop is part of a community service commitment by Rotary known as “Rotary Has Heart for Seniors.” At their regular club meeting Wednesday at Highland Country Club, Mayor Jim Thornton proclaimed the day “Rotary Has Heart Day” in the city and presented the club with a mayoral proclamation.

The service commitment is in conjunction with Rotary clubs in the eastern United States and across the Caribbean, which are combining resources to promote community service projects reflecting Rotary International’s six areas of focus: basic education and literacy, economic and community development, disease prevention and treatment, peace and conflict prevention and resolution, water and sanitation, maternal and child health.
