LaGRANGE —The Georgia State Patrol had identified the victims in a fatal head-on collision in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near the I-185 connector.

Officials said William Louis Wagar, 78, and Deborah Wagar, 61, both of Tallahassee, Florida, died as a result of the wreck that happened just after 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Troopers said William Wagar was driving a Subaru in the northbound lanes of I-85 and was attempting to pass an RV camper when he struck the edge of the vehicle.

The collision sent the Subaru across the grassy median and into the southbound lanes of I-85, where the couple’s vehicle was hit by a vehicle traveling toward LaGrange, troopers stated.

Officials said Deborah Wagar died at the scene.

William Wagar was being airlifted to a hospital in Atlanta when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest, GSP stated. The flight team diverted to a hospital in Newnan, but Wagar later died.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, no one was hurt in the RV or in the vehicle traveling in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85.

GSP officials said the Wagars were on the way to see relatives in Alpharetta for the weekend.
