Patrick Strickland, a former Callaway High standout, helped lead the Point University golf team to a second-place finish in the Appalachian Athletic Conference spring championship on Tuesday in Locust Grove.
Reinhardt University took the top spot with a team score of 607 in the two-day competition, and Point finished six strokes back.
Strickland, a junior, had back-to-back rounds of 75, and he finished tied for eighth place.
In March, Point hosted the Skyhawk Invitational at Callaway Gardens, and Strickland had a strong showing in that tournament as well.
Strickland had rounds of 77 and 75, and he finished in 12th place and had his team’s third best score.
Next up for Strickland and the Skyhawks will be the AAC Direct Qualifier in Acworth on April 17-19.
Strickland signed with Point after an exceptional career at Callaway that culminated with a third-place finish at the Class AAA state tournament in 2013.
Strickland was tied for first place at the end of 18 holes, and he finished third in a three-man playoff.
Strickland also played basketball for the Cavaliers.
TENNIS: Former LaGrange Granger Emory Deloach, one of the top players for the Reinhardt tennis team, was victorious in singles and doubles on Wednesday as the Eagles handled Carson-Newman 8-1.
Deloach was Reinhardt’s number two singles player, and he was a part of the number one doubles team.
In doubles, Deloach and Fabio Pereira teamed up to win 8-4, and Deloach won his singles match 6-3, 6-3.
Deloach, a junior, has been a key member of the Reinhardt lineup since his arrival as a freshman in 2014.
Reinhardt is 10-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play, and it will face Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday for the regular season Appalachian Athletic Conference championship.
A year ago, Deloach helped Reinhardt reach the NAIA national championship where it fell to Auburn-Montgomery.
