LAGRANGE – That the LaGrange College Panthers would be in a position to win the USA South’s regular-season baseball title seemed very much in doubt a month ago.
After dropping two of three to visiting Piedmont, LaGrange College was 2-4 in the USA South, and it was already facing a sizeable deficit in the conference.
Since a 15-5 loss to Piedmont on March 7, though, LaGrange College has been perfect in conference play, and it will look to stay hot when it wraps up its USA South schedule this weekend.
The Panthers (25-10 overall) have ripped off nine consecutive conference wins, and heading into this weekend’s home series against Maryville, they’re 11-4 in the USA South, just one game behind Ferrum (22-10, 12-3) for first place.
Ferrum will complete its conference schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Averett (18-16, 7-8).
The Panthers haven’t been losing any games of late.
With Tuesday’s sweep of Millsaps, the Panthers have won 12 straight games overall, and they’ve won 15 of their past 16 games.
In the most recent Division III poll, LaGrange College received 14 votes, and it has the same amount of wins as the top-ranked team, Trinity (Texas).
LaGrange College and Maryville will kick off their series with a game at 7 p.m. today, and there will be single games on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.
It has also been a successful season for Maryville, which is 24-11 overall, and 9-6 in the conference.
After Tuesday’s home game against Emory, LaGrange College will head to Wilson, N.C. on Thursday for the start of the USA South tournament.
LaGrange College’s softball team will be on the road today and Saturday as it continues its USA South schedule.
The Panthers play a doubleheader against Covenant today at 2 p.m., and they’ll visit Piedmont on Saturday at 1 p.m.
LaGrange College (13-14 overall) is looking to improve on its 6-10 USA South record.
