WEST POINT – They finished in style.
The Troup Tigers handled Harris County 4-2 in a boys’ soccer match on Thursday in West Point to close the season with a victory.
The Tigers didn’t achieve their goal of making it to the state playoffs, but they recovered from that disappointment to win their final two games of the season.
Troup beat Callaway earlier in the week to sew up the county championship, and it returned to West Point and handled Harris County in its season finale.
“Our guys played really well,” Troup head coach Jase Crenshaw said. “It was a great way to end the season, and send the seniors off with a win.”
One of those seniors, Thomas Trotter, had a hat trick with three goals, and Jimmy Cancino had one goal.
“It was an awesome way to send him out,” Crenshaw said of Trotter.
Another senior, Juan Herrera, chipped in with a couple of assists, and senior goal keeper Matt Moore had a big day.
“Matt Moore played great in goal, had a lot of nice saves,” Crenshaw said.
Although Troup didn’t qualify for the state playoffs, the team did have some nice moments this season, including the wins over LaGrange and Callaway that wrapped up the county title.
Crenshaw will have some talented seniors to replace, four of whom will be playing college soccer.
The soccer regular season is scheduled to end today on the local scene, with Callaway set to host LaGrange at 5:30 p.m.
Next week, the girls’ teams from Callaway and LaGrange will be on the road for first-round matchups in the state playoffs after both teams finished third in their respective regions.
