LaGRANGE — County commissioners on Friday unanimously approved a bid to replace the flood-damaged field turf at Callaway Stadium.

The total cost of the repairs is expected to be $308,050 and will be paid for by the county government, the Board of Education and LaGrange College.

Commissioners awarded the repair contract to Sprinturf, an Atlanta-based company that specializes in artificial athletic field turf.

The county’s portion, 30 percent of the total cost, will be paid for using special-purpose, local option sales tax — SPLOST — funds, and the board of education and college will each contribute 35 percent of the cost.

As much as 77.5 percent of the cost could be reimbursed to the county by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Damage to the field happened in December 2015 when torrential rains flooded parts of Troup County, according to Tod Tentler, county manager.

Gravel beneath the field shifted in the floods, causes hard spots on the turf — a possible danger to athletes playing on the field.

The current turf was guaranteed to last eight years, and was installed by Sprinturf nine years ago. The work is expected to be completed in time for the 2016-2017 football season.

Sprinturf has more than 1,000 turf installations in leading sports programs, colleges, universities and professional athletic teams across North America and abroad, according to its website.

Its dual-yarn systems are manufactured in the United States at Sprinturf facilities in Alabama and Georgia. Sprinturf is the only company in North America that creates 100 percent of its fibers in-house and in the United States.
