Ferguson picks up another endorsement

LaGRANGE — Congressional candidate and former West Point Mayor Drew Ferguson picked up another endorsement Friday, this time from former primary opponent Jim Pace.

“Drew Ferguson is the real conservative I want to see representing Georgia’s 3rd (Congressional District) in Washington,” Pace said in a statement released by Ferguson’s campaign.

“He is a jobs conservative who has a track record of keeping taxes and regulations low and jobs creation enthusiasm high,” Pace said. “Caring about our communities and finding ways to help people succeed and live their American Dream without government breathing down their necks, telling them what to do, is the conservative way.”

Ferguson will face fellow GOP contender Mike Crane of Newnan in a July 26 runoff election for Georgia’s 3rd Congressional District. The runoff winner will face Democratic nominee Angela Pendley in the November general election.

Georgia’s 3rd Congressional seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, who is not seeking re-election.

Pace joins four of Ferguson’s other previous opponents, Chip Flanegan, Richard Mix, Sam Anders and Rod Thomas, all of whom endorsed Ferguson earlier this month.

“I’m very excited and honored for this endorsement and support,” Ferguson told the Daily News on Friday. “Jim ran a good campaign, he understands how to create jobs and he’s a solid conservative. To know he’s behind me, and asking his folks to get behind us means a lot to the campaign. There’s a lot of work ahead of us, but we have a good opportunity in front of us — having Jim’s support, along with all the others … says a lot about this race.”

So far, the race has been tight. Ferguson finished second to Crane by 93 votes, with both clinching 26 percent of the total ballots cast. Pace came in third with about 2,000 fewer votes than Ferguson.

Crane’s campaign released the following statement Friday in response to the endorsement: “It’s no surprise that the establishment is circling the wagons to protect crony capitalism in Washington. The more political insiders and business elites scramble to stop our campaign, the more the voters see the true choice in this election. When I’m elected to Congress, we’ll stop the crony capitalism and put an end to the political and business elites’ scheme to mortgage the future of our country to line their pockets.”
