Those who like their Independence Day weekend hotter than a firecracker got their wish this year as the mercury hit record levels in LaGrange.

Saturday’s high of 99 at LaGrange-Callaway Airport broke the previous record for the date of 98, set in 1954. And Sunday peaked at 100, surpassing by two degrees the previous mark, also set in 1954.

More sweltering weather is in the forecast, although not expected to break records. Today’s outlook is for a high of 95 and a low of 74, with a 20 percent chance of rain.

There’s an 80 percent chance of rain Tuesday, decreasing to 30 percent by Thursday, with highs in the mid-90s and lows in the lower 70s each day.

Normal extremes for this time of year are 90 and 68.
