LaGRANGE — A 15 year old was behind bars at the Troup County Jail this morning after he was arrested and charged in the shooting death of a man on North Cary Street.
Jerry Carston, 15, of LaGrange, was taken into custody about 11 p.m. Monday at a home in the 300 block of Revis Street, said LaGrange police.
The teen is charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and by a person under the age of 18, and participation in criminal street gangs. He is charged as an adult, according to police investigators.
Carston is accused of shooting Quentin D. Williams, 25, multiple times about 7 p.m. Sunday in the first block of North Cary Street — less than a block away from his home in Wood Glenn Apartments at 64 N. Cary St., investigators said.
Williams was taken to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center but died, stated police.
Witnesses told investigators they saw Williams speaking with an unidentified African-American male just before gunshots were fired. Witnesses then saw Williams lying on the sidewalk and the other male running toward Hogansville Road.
After following up on several leads, investigators connected Carston to the crime.
The teen is awaiting transfer to the Youth Detention Center in Columbus.
The case remains active. Anyone with information is asked to call the LaGrange Police Department at 706-883-2603 or Troup County Crime Stoppers at 706-812-1000. Callers can remain anonymous.
