Troup’s softball team swept by Cedartown

CEDARTOWN – The season came to a close for the Troup Lady Tigers on Monday in the Region 5-AAAA softball tournament.

In a best-of-three series, it was Cedartown winning both ends of a doubleheader to advance to the semifinals.

Cedartown won the first game 10-2, and it finished off the sweep with an 11-0 victory.

It was the final game for Troup seniors Chandler Pritchett, Kinley Stanford, Andrea Nix and Cierra Gilbert.

Stanford had a strong season with a batting average near .290, and Gilbert hit better than .260 and reached double digits in hits.

Pritchett and Gilbert were also valuable members of the team, and Pritchett had a base hit in her final at-bat on Monday.

A strong group of players will be returning for Troup, including Maddie Weathers, Kayla Lane, Madison McCartney, Abby Taylor and Skye Loftin, who were among the team’s top hitters this season.

VOLLEYBALL: The Area 5-AAAA tournament will get under today at Sandy Creek, with Troup and LaGrange both looking to keep their seasons alive.

Troup, the tournament’s number two seed, will face seventh-seeded Cedartown, and LaGrange will play top-seeded Sandy Creek.

The winners of today’s matches advance to the semifinals on Thursday, and they’ll also qualify for the state tournament.

CROSS COUNTRY: The county championship will be held today, with teams from Callaway, LaGrange, Troup and Lafayette Christian getting together at Troup High.

The girls’ race begins at 5 p.m., and the boys’ race gets started at 5:30 p.m.

There will be a junior-varsity race at 6 p.m.
