HOGANSVILLE – It was a special senior-day moment for Callaway High’s Makayla Davis.

In the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game against Jordan, Davis came to the plate with a pair of runners on and her team leading 10-1.

Davis drove the ball to the fence in right field, and she took off and never slowed down.

Davis ended up making it all the way home for the three-run, inside-the-park home run, and that brought the run rule into play, and Callaway won 13-1.

Davis was one of four seniors honored before the start of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

The other seniors are KeKe Talley, Acia Stephens and China Eldridge.

Earlier in the fourth inning, Talley delivered an RBI single, pushing the lead to 10-1, and that brought Davis to the plate.

With the crowd cheering her on, Davis rounded the bases and ended the game in style.

“I was just running my hardest,” Davis said. “That was a big moment.”

Davis has been a part-time player this season, and she was pleased to get a chance to show what she could do.

“I felt like I’ve gotten better in practice, and coach can keep me out there,” Davis said. “I just had confidence.”

In the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, Callaway won 10-5, and it finished off the doubleheader sweep with the 13-1 win.

In the second game, Callaway exploded for six runs in the first inning, it added three more runs in the second before ending it with four runs in the fourth inning.

Talley, in what could be her final game on her home field, had three hits including a triple, and Oeisha Jenkins had a pair of doubles,

Jasmine Dukes had a pair of hits including a double, and Kelly Carlisle, Skylar Rice, Leijorey Sanders, Lydia Bartlett and Davis also had hits.

Rice pitched the four-inning complete game.

In the first game, Carlisle had a standout game from the leadoff position withi three hits, and Dukes had three hits from the number two spot in the lineup.

Jenkins had a home run during a four-run first inning, and Rice and Stephens had two hits apiece.

Talley and Davis also had hits, and Jenkins was the winning pitcher.

Callaway closed the regular season with a 4-4 record in Region 5-AA, and it will play Lamar County at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the region tournament.

VOLLEYBALL: Troup earned an invitation to state by beating Cedartown on Tuesday in the Region 5-AAAA volleyball tournament at Sandy Creek.

Troup will play Cartersville in a semifinal matchup on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., and if it wins that match, it will play for a region championship.

If Troup makes it to the region-title game, it will host a match in the state tournament.

Also on Tuesday, LaGrange’s season came to a close with a loss to Chapel Hill.
