Callaway prevails in regular-season finale

The Callaway High softball team put the wraps on its regular-season schedule with a 4-2 road win over Brookstone on Thursday.

Oeisha Jenkins had herself quite a day.

The sophomore was not only the winning pitcher, but she also got the save, and she had three hits.

Jenkins started and was relieved by Sklar Rice, and she moved back to the pitcher’s mound in the seventh inning and recorded the final out.

Callaway now turns its attention to the Region 5-AA tournament that will be played Saturday at Heard County.

Callaway, the number three seed, plays second-seeded Lamar County at 2 p.m., and if it wins that game, it would play for the region championship at 6 p.m.

If Callaway drops its first game on Saturday, it would play again at 2 p.m. for third place.

In Saturday’s other semifinal game, top-seeded Heard County will play fourth-seeded Temple at noon.

If Callaway finishes second or higher in the tournament, it will be at home for the first round of the state playoffs.

In Thursday’s game, Rice led the way with her three hits, including two doubles, and she also drove in three runs.

Leadoff hitter Kelly Carlisle, Leijorey Sanders and Rice also had hits.

Callaway head coach Ashley Summerlin said the defense was sharp throughout the game, with infielder Kourtney Greer and Sanders in the outfield both making some outstanding plays.

“We played really good defense today,” Summerlin said.

Offensively, Summerlin said the hitters “put balls in play and just caused some havoc. All in all it was a good day, a good tune-up game.”

SOCCER: LaGrange Academy’s season came to a close with a 4-0 loss to Brandon Hall in the semifinals of the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association semifinals on Thursday.

If LaGrange Academy had won, it would have been in position to possibly win a second straight state championship, but it fell short in the road game in Atlanta.
