Callaway takes on Lamar in region tourney

HOGANSVILLE – The Callaway Lady Cavaliers know they’re going to be in the state softball tournament.

If Callaway is going to be at home, though, it will have to find a way to beat Lamar County today in the Region 5-AA tournament.

There are four teams in the tournament that will be played at Heard County, and each of those teams is guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs.

The top two finishers will be at home for the first round of the state tournament, while the other two teams will be on the road next week.

Third-seeded Callaway will play second-seeded Lamar County at 2 p.m., and the winner of that game will face either Heard County or Temple at 6 p.m. in the region-championship game.

Heard County, the top seed, plays fourth-seeded Temple at noon.

There will be a third-place game at 4 p.m.

Callaway played Lamar County twice in the regular season.

In the first meeting, Callaway was unable to find any offensive success and it lost 6-0.

In the rematch, Callaway swung the bat well and won 13-6 in what was a three-run game heading to the seventh inning.

“We’ve got a chance,” Callaway coach Ashley Summerlin said. “We’re excited about playing Lamar. They do a good job with their kids. Our kids are excited to play. We’re looking forward to it.”

Callaway (12-13 overall) finished the regular season with a 4-4 region record.

In its final regular-season game, Callaway played well in a 4-2 non-region victory over Brookstone on Thursday, with sophomore Oeisha Jenkins banging out three hits while driving in three runs.

Jenkins was also the winning pitcher, and she’ll likely be on the mound for today’s game against Lamar County.
