Aspinwall Chiropractic a family practice

LaGRANGE – Patients greet the doctors by their first names as they enter the waiting room at Aspinwall Chiropractic on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.
The doctors at this family practice have gone by their first names for 35 years now, since Dr. Jim and Dr. Keith Aspinwall started working at the practice with their father, Dr. A.J. Aspinwall. The Aspinwall Chiropractic Clinic has been working in LaGrange since 1952, making it 64 years old.
“(Our dad) was in the Navy in World War II, and he developed migraines,” said Dr. Keith Aspinwall. “Of course the Navy sent him to all their specialists. … They couldn’t find anything wrong with him, and so he was home on leave.
“And he was telling his mom about his migraines and how much he was suffering from them. And she said, ‘Well, I’ve got an appointment with my chiropractor. Why don’t you go with me and see if he can help?’” And his response was, ‘Well, what is a chiropractor going to be able to do that these specialists and neurologist can’t do?’ And she said, ‘Nothing if you don’t go.’ … And so he did go with her, and he did receive relief from treatment for his migraines.”
After leaving the Navy, A.J. Aspinwall went to chiropractic college at the urging of the same chiropractor that had helped him with his migraines, and to this day, migraines are the most common concern that the doctors see at the practice, though far from the only problem the doctors seek to address.
“I just love working with people,” said Dr. Jim Aspinwall. “Seeing the improvements that we get to see because… we are able to help people without drugs, and sometimes we are able to prevent people from having surgeries or get people off medications they don’t really want to have to take, but they have to because of the level of pain.”
The doctors explained that if the joints are moving well then inflammation, and by extension pain, will decrease, and that if the nervous system within the spine is not functioning properly, then neither will the rest of the body.
“I don’t love to see when someone has to be assisted in walking, but I love to see when they walk out by themselves when they were assisted coming in,” said Dr. Keith Aspinwall. “And that happens quite frequently.”
