CARTERSVILLE – With quarterback LaPerion Perry getting his most playing time this season, the LaGrange Grangers did some good things offensively against the state’s top-ranked team Friday night.

The end result was yet another blowout win for the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes, though.

Cartersville has dismantled every team it has played this season, and Friday was no exception.

LaGrange hung in there early and trailed 14-7 through the first quarter, but Cartersville busted it open from there and won 52-7.

Cartersville, which won a state championship a year ago and is the favorite to make it two in a row, improved to 7-0 overall, and it is 3-0 in Region 5-AAAA.

Cartersville has outscored its three region opponents by a combined score of 155-22.

LaGrange, meanwhile, finds itself in desperation mode.

LaGrange (2-5 overall) is in fifth place in the region with a 1-2 record, and it has three region games remaining, including Friday’s showdown against Troup.

LaGrange closes the regular season with games against Sandy Creek and Chapel Hill.

Against Cartersville, Perry played nearly the entire game.

Perry, who was an all-state quarterback last year, made his season debut against Cedartown two weeks ago, and he played the entire first half before sitting out much of the second half.

Perry faced no limitations against Cartersville, and he was on the field for nearly every offensive snap.

LaGrange didn’t get much done on the ground, but Perry threw for 123 yards, with most of that coming in the first half when he was 6-of-9 for 99 yards.

LaGrange’s lone scoring drive came in the first quarter when it went 80 yards for the touchdown.

Perry completed a 36-yard pass to Bo Russell on that drive, and LaGrange also benefited from a pass interference call.

Junior running back Cornell Kendrick, who has been extremely effective in short-yardage situations, capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.

Cartersville was clinging to a 14-7 lead after the first quarter, but it scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 35-7 lead at the break.

In the second half, LaGrange appeared to be on the verge of scoring another touchdown, but it lost a fumble at the goal line.

Cartersville quarterback Trevor Lawrence, one of the state’s top players at his position, was as good as advertised.

Lawrence completed 19-of-28 passes for 283 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
