Cavaliers remain fourth in Class AA rankings

LAGRANGE – The Callaway Cavaliers delivered a dominant performance in beating the sixth-ranked team in the state, but they’ve stayed put in this week’s Associated Press poll.

As impressive as Callaway was in beating Heard County 24-14, the three teams ahead of it in the Class AA rankings also won, so there was no change at the top.

Benedictine received 12 of the 13 first-place votes and is tops in Class AA, and Fitzgerald, Jefferson County, Callaway and Rabun County round out the top five.

Heard County, following its loss to Callaway, fell to 10th.

Heard County jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in last week’s game, but Callaway scored the next 24 points and there was no suspense late.

Heard County scored a touchdown in the closing moments to make the final score more respectable.

It has been smooth sailing for the Cavaliers, who are 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 5-AA following wins over Lamar County and Heard County.

Callaway will try to stay perfect when it visits Temple on Friday.

Troup, meanwhile, is inching closer to cracking the top 10 in Class AAAA.

Troup, which beat LaGrange 37-26 to improve to 6-1, received the most votes of any team not in the top 10.

Another team receiving votes in Class AAAA is Cedartown, and it will play Troup on Thursday in a critical region showdown.

If the Tigers win, they would not only make it seven straight victories, but they would assure themselves of finishing at least second in Region 5-AAAA, meaning they’d be at home for the first round of the state playoffs.
