LaGRANGE – U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Marietta, was elected for another term on Tuesday night with 55 percent of the vote.

Isakson has been a Georgia senator since 2005, and while in the Senate, he has advocated lower taxes, a stronger military and smaller government, among other issues. He has said he intends to continue doing the same work that got him reelected once he returns to Washington.

“It has been my honor to serve Georgia, and I am proud and humbled that Georgia voters have put their confidence in me for another six years,” said Isakson in a statement on Tuesday night. “During my next term, I can promise that I will be the same Johnny Isakson you have known and in whom you have placed your trust.”

His opponents in the senate race, Jim Barksdale and Allen Buckley, won 1,562,626 and 159,714 votes respectively for the state. Of those votes, Barksdale won 4,134 votes in Troup County, and Buckley won 445.

“I’m disappointed that I didn’t do better,” said Buckley, who disagrees with certain key aspects of Isakson’s fiscal policy. “… Change is going to have to come or the country is going to implode.”

Barksdale could not be reached for comment regarding the outcome of the race.
