MACON – The Troup High wrestling team surged to a fourth-place finish in the Class AAAA state duals in Macon.
Troup, which is in the midst of an exceptional season, went 4-2 in the three-day event to finish fourth out of 16 teams.
Both of Troup’s losses came to Luella.
On Thursday, Troup opened with a 67-4 win over Perry before losing a 31-30 heart-breaker to Luella.
While that loss knocked the Tigers out of championship contention, they still had a chance to earn a place on the podium by finishing in the top four.
Troup made it happen.
On Friday, Troup won twice, beating Ridgeland 30-25 and Oconee County 56-10.
Troup then beat Woodward Academy 48-19 on Saturday morning to earn the right to wrestle for third place.
In a rematch with Luella, Troup lost 44-28 to place fourth.
LaGrange also competed in the Class AAAA state duals, and it went 4-2.
LaGrange opened with a 36-32 loss to Marist on Thursday, but it bounced back to beat Northside-Columbus 58-18 later in the day.
LaGrange’s tournament run came to a close with a 41-33 loss to Oconee County on Friday.
LaGrange will host the county championship on Tuesday, with Troup and Callaway also participating.
