Callaway rolls in doubleheader sweep

TEMPLE – It was a suspense-free day for the Callaway Cavaliers.

Callaway (10-7 overall) beat Temple 17-1 and 13-0 on Friday to improve to 3-0 in Region 5-AA.

In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, the Cavaliers took control early with five runs in the first inning, and they added seven runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth.

In the first inning, Drake Wade doubled, Kyle Campbell was hit by a pitch, Dylan Johnson walked, and Slone Raper delivered a two-run hit.

Chandler Lott added an RBI hit in the inning, and two more runs scored when Milton Turner reached on an error.

In the fourth inning, Josh Hanson and Wade reached on one-out hits and Campbell was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Johnson delivered a three-run double.

Raper and Braelin Mitchell added RBI singles, and Turner had an RBI double.

In the fifth, Callaway was helped out by four walks and hit batter, and Turner had an RBI double.

Hanson started and pitched all five innings, and he gave up five hits and an unearned run while striking out eight.

In the second game, the Cavaliers opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning.

Wade doubled and later scored on a Johnson groundout, and Johnson scored on a wild pitch.

In the second inning, Turner reached on an error and stole two bases before scoring on a Wade sacrifice fly.

In the fourth inning, Turner walked, Wade singled, and both of them scored when Campbell reached on an error.

In the fifth inning, Lott and Ben Griffin each had doubles, and Turner, Campbell, Johnson and Mitchell had base hits.

Johnson was Callaway’s starting pitcher, and he threw four dominant innings, giving up just one hit with 10 strikeouts.

Wesley Marchman pitched the fifth inning.
