LaGRANGE – The Daily News’ weekly Neighbors series features one person from LaGrange and the surrounding area.
This week we sought a little biblical inspiration with Brent Conrad, a volunteer at the Biblical History Center on Gordon Commercial Drive and a builder with Principle Construction.
LaGrange Daily News: How long have you lived in LaGrange?
Conrad: We moved here in May of 1988 – Cinco de Mayo, we got here on Cinco de Mayo – and we moved from San Antonio, so it was appropriate.
LDN: What brought you here?
Conrad: Work.
LDN: What are some of your favorite places in LaGrange/Troup County?
Conrad: Of course, here (at the Biblical Histroy Center). Charlie Joseph’s. We joined First Baptist Church early on, and it is kind of our second family. Gordon Street, we live on Gordon Street, and we love Gordon Street.
LDN: What is the most beautiful place around here?
Conrad: I like the Hills & Dales (Estate).
LDN: What do you like to do with your free time?
Conrad: When I’m not here (at the Biblical History Center), I like to spend time with family. We’ve got three daughters. One is in Atlanta, so she’s kind of close, and one is at college. One lives in Washington, so it is getting harder to spend time with them, but that’s our favorite thing to do. That is what we’ll be doing today (for Easter) with two of them – the youngest and the oldest.
LDN: What kind of business would you like to see come to LaGrange?
Conrad: I think the automotive will continue to expand. Those are good jobs, so I’d like to see it grow more. It seems like the healthcare – the healthcare is growing, and I’d like this to – well it is becoming a hub, especially for this area for medical care, and it is going to grow more. I think I’ve always thought that this would be a good retirement area. The climate’s nice. Low cost of living. You’re close to Atlanta and the airport, but you’re not so close that you have all the congestion of the big city. I’ve always thought that since I moved here to this area.
LDN: What do you do here at the Biblical History Center?
Conrad: I give tours on Saturdays of course that includes the biblical tours out here and the biblical meal. I help Dr. (James) Fleming. I am in the construction business, so I am kind of like a very cheap, free consultant. I may not always know the answer, but I try to find it for him. I try to help any way that I can, but it is mainly the tours.
LDN: Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Conrad: I’d just like to encourage everyone to come visit. It is amazing how many people know about us that live in the county – that I go to church with – that have been meaning to come out here but have never been. Because we have people come from all over the country, and we’ve had international visitors. They may not have come just to see us, but they were in Atlanta and heard about us. So, I’d just really like for everyone to experience it, and we are always looking for volunteers.
