New transplants to the city may soon have another reminder of what LaGrange has to offer with the naming of a new road to note one of the city’s most iconic homes.

The Vernon Road Country Club connector may finally have a name following a suggestion from the Callaway family, who was instrumental in making the road possible.

“The Callaway family has submitted a request that we name the road Hills & Dales Crossing because that property is the historic Hills & Dales farm,” Mayor Jim Thornton said.

The city council noted that the name would be appropriate considering the road’s location near the historic estate, which is one of the city’s longest standing attractions.

“A year or so ago, the council and the county commission approved construction on a road from Vernon to Country Club through property being donated by the Callaway Land Trust,” Thornton said. “That road was thought to be about a $4 million project and ended out coming in at about $2.8 million, so it came in substantially under the budget. The Callaway Foundation contributed $2 million to that project, so the total 2 mile road ended up costing the county SPLOST only about $800,000, so it was a very good deal.”

The city hopes that the two mile road will relieve some of the traffic near LaGrange College, especially during peak hours and expressed its gratitude to the foundation for making the road possible.

“I think we are very fortunate to have the Callaway Foundation in Troup County and in our area,” Councilman Willie Edmondson said.

“They have contributed a whole lot to make LaGrange what it is, and I just applaud them for what they do.”

The LaGrange City Council will host a public hearing on the road name on July 25 at 5:30 p.m. at 208 Ridley Ave.
