For the second straight year, local nonprofit Positive Contributions will host a charity basketball game in an effort to raise money for Haircutz & Stylez 4 Kidz, a back-to-school program that will celebrate its tenth year in August.
Positive Contributions is run by Michael Fannin, a local third grade teacher. For ten years, he’s held his annual haircut and styles day, where dozens of stylists and barbers from around the area volunteer to get children ready for the first day of school.
The game will be held July 15 at 4 p.m. at the William J. Griggs Recreation Center, located at 716 Glenn Robertson Drive in LaGrange, and will feature Rookies vs. Veterans. Rookies are anyone high school age through 22 and veterans are anyone 23 and above.
The game was started last year to help fund the Haircutz & Stlyez 4 Kidz day.
“I think we made over $500 with $5 admission and if you bring a backpack filled with school supplies you get in free,” Fannin said of last year.
The money raised from the basketball game goes toward buying school supplies and purchasing food for the haircut event, Fannin said. Last year, barbers completed more than 500 haircuts, and Fannin is expecting at last that many year this year.
“It went from year one out of a barbership serving maybe 35 people to year nine at William Griggs to over a thousand people,” Fannin said.
The haircut and styles day will take place on Aug. 13 from 1-5 p.m.
