Mr. Rayburn Abercrombie, 101, passed away Friday, July 14, 2017, at West Georgia Hospice.
Mr. Abercrombie was born January 28, 1916, in Carrollton to the late Thomas H. and Sarah M. Banks Abercrombie. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange. Mr. Abercrombie married the love of his life, Lathan Justice on July 6, 1941.
Mr. Abercrombie proudly served his country, during WWII as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force, where he fell in love with planes. After the war, he continued his love for flying as a pilot/engineer for Pan Am Airlines. Rayburn and Lathan traveled the globe together and enjoyed seeing the world.
The Abercrombie’s lived and worked in Coral Gables, Florida; there they enjoyed the tropical climate and spending time with family, friends and their beloved poodle. The Abercrombie’s retired home to LaGrange, Georgia to be closer to Lathan’s sister, Audrey Sue Justice.
Mr. Abercrombie was an active member in numerous charitable organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, Shriner’s Hospital for Children, and the Scottish Rite; in which he was a 33rd degree Mason.
Mr. Abercrombie was preceded in death by his wife, Lathan. He leaves his cherished memories to his cousin, God-daughter, DeLee Davis of Lakeland, Florida and many friends and loved ones.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2017, in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Dr. Harry Barrow and Reverend Jan Stewart Tolbert officiating. The visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday. Burial will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or the Kiwanis Foundation in Rayburn’s honor.
