Preacher Coleman Hugh Vines of LaGrange, GA made his final journey home on Monday, July 31, 2017, surrounded by his family and friends at Poplar Creek.

Hugh was born to Otha Lee and Annie Richardson Vines in Carroll County on September 29, 1916. He lived a full and faithful life, attending Atlanta Christian College and was an ordained Christian Minister for over 50 years.

He had a variety of occupations, including truck driver and Teamster member.

Hugh was the first Chaplain of the LaGrange Police Department, appointed by Chief Gary Sheppard, and was very proud when three of his grandsons later went into law enforcement. All three of his sons followed him into truck driving, as well as three of his grandsons. Probably, he was best known as “Grandma Sally” the greeter at Publix, he often said he got more fun out of talking and joking with the kids than they did.

In his later years, he enjoyed spending time at the Senior Center and going on many trips with them. One of his most rewarding trips was to the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. Hugh was a very proud Veteran of both the Army and the Navy during World War II.

One of his proudest accomplishments was his large family and playing his harmonica for his grandchildren, they always wanted Grandaddy to play “The Train”, which was a family favorite.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Cash Vines; second wife, Mary Alice Cotton Vines; daughters, Ruth Vines Holder, LaVerne Buchannon Chatham, and Bonnie Carter Barnett; son, James Lee Vines.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lee Vines; sons, Grady Coleman (Beverly) Vines of Covington and Michael David (Jimmie) Vines Sr. of LaGrange; 16 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren.

His family and friends thank the Good Lord for allowing us to have his love and guidance for as long as He saw fit and look forward to hearing Grandaddy say once again, “Welcome Home My Child.”

The Gathering of Family and Friends will be Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home. The Celebration of Life service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Reverend Roger Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Bethany Christian Church Cemetery in Carrollton, GA.
