Mattie Mullins Jessie

Mattie Mullins Jessie passed away Wednesday.

She was born on July 15, 1927, in Carrollton, Georgia to Crogman Mullins Sr. and Hattie Avery Mullins.

She received a B.A. degree in Education from then Clark College and now Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. Mattie began teaching in the LaGrange City School System in the 1950’s where she met and married the love of her life, the late Thomas S. Jessie. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, she taught at Kelley Grammar Elementary School. She was reassigned to Cannon Street School, before accepting another teaching position at Unity Elementary School and retired in 1985 after 35 years of service.

Mattie was a long-time member of Warren Temple United Methodist Church, where she served for many years as an usher board member.  She was also a member of the United Methodist Women.

She was very active in the LaGrange community. She served as a member in the following organizations: Theta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., The LaGrange Chapter of the Links Inc., Clark Atlanta University Alumni Association Inc., (both the national and the LaGrange Chapter where she served as treasurer), the Continental Societies Inc. and the Committee Social Club. Her community involvement also included volunteering at the local polls and offering her services to literacy programs.  She remained active in the organizations listed above and continued her volunteer work, even after retirement.

In addition to her husband, Thomas; and by her son, Brian Thomas Jessie; she was preceded in death by her siblings, Juanita Mullins, Crogman Mullins, Jr. and Inez Demery.

Survivors include her daughters, Anita Simmons of Savannah, Georgia and Denise Jessie of Sandy Springs, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Jessie, Powder Springs, Georgia; son-in-law, Charles Simmons, Savannah, Georgia; four grandchildren, one great granddaughter; her sister Theresa L. Ward and brother-in-law Case B. Ward, Carrollton, Georgia; and a host of other loving nieces, nephews and family members too numerous to name.

The family shall receive friends and family on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 3, 2017, at 2 p.m., both events will be held at Warren Temple United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Southview Cemetery.
