George R. Moore, Sr., age 87 passed away at home on Thursday, July 27, 2017. He was born on June 26, 1930, in Eufaula, AL to the late Lee Edward Moore Sr. and Georgia Moore.

He received a Masters of Education in Administration and Supervision from Tuskegee University, Education Specialist Degree in Administration and Supervision from West Georgia College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science from Fort Valley State College. Mr. Moore received additional education at Harvard University, Columbia University and the NDEA Guidance Institute. At Atlanta University, he conducted important research on voting and elections in Georgia at a time during the 1940s and 1950s when it was difficult for minorities to vote. He took Tax courses for Accessors and Appraisers at the University of Georgia and the Department of Revenue in various cities.

Mr. Moore was an inspirational, dedicated educator in the Troup and Heard County school districts for 38 years. He was a teacher and counselor for Mary Johnson High School and school counselor at East Depot Street High School; Assistant Principal at LaGrange Boys Junior High School and LaGrange Senior High School; and Principal of the Hill Street Junior High School in LaGrange, GA.

Mr. Moore was a devoted member of Warren Temple United Methodist Church where he served as Treasurer, Trustee, Adult Bible Class Teacher, Secretary for the Methodist Men, and Historian.  In addition, he served on the Committee on District Superintendancy, North Georgia Conference Equitable Salary Committee, Advisory Board of Simpsonwood Retreat Center, and was a delegate to the North Georgia Conference. As an appointed Counselor, for several Projects and programs, he was able to discover talented students and encourage them to achieve their potential as lawyers, doctors, writers, college professors and more. He received numerous certificates of appreciation and honors in the field of Education, Fraternal, Alumni Associations and Religious. In addition, three buildings were named in his honor in LaGrange, GA. The 1989 LaGrange High School Yearbook was dedicated to George R. Moore for Community Service and dedicated work as an Educator. A veteran, he served as a noncommissioned Army officer during the Korean War, he received a Letter of Commendation from the Third Air Force, 928th Engineering Aviation Group.

He became a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in 1948 at Fort Valley State University and is a Life Member.  He was a devoted member of the Wi-Band Civic Club, Optimist Club and the 100 Black Men.

Survivors include his sons: George Robert Moore, Jr., of LaGrange, GA; and Edmund H. Moore of Huber Heights, OH; grandchildren, two great grandchildren; three sisters: Mrs. Roxane Steward (James), Louie A Marshall, and Mrs. Alice Denson (Tommie).  He has a host of other relatives and friends at the Warren Temple United Methodist Church, LaGrange, GA.

The Celebration of Life Service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Warren Temple Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens.
