On Tuesday, the LaGrange City Council voted to approve a grant application that would help pay for the construction of sections of The Thread.

The grant is for $200,000 and is from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

If approved, the grant would provide funding for The Thread in areas where the trail passes through parks and greenspaces. There are several sections of The Thread’s master plan that show the trail passing through eligible areas.

“This trail grant is for off road trails, and it is a $200,000 ask from the grant,” City Manager Meg Kelsey said. “We will also be asking the county to apply for the trail grant in their name, and that would be another $200,000. That would be a total of $400,000, and that would really help us with The Thread project.”

The terms of the grant would require that the city match the grant with 20 percent of the grant, which would be $40,000 from the city. According to Kelsey, that money could come from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds that are already designated for the project.

“This is a similar project to what the council applied for with Granger Park about three years ago — even before The Thread was designed — that was when the Callaway Foundation wanted to donate that adjoining land, and so we applied for the trail grant and received it for that project,” Mayor Jim Thornton said. “This would be for other portions of The Thread.”

According to County Manager Tod Tentler, the grant application will be discussed at the Troup County Board of Commissioners Work Session on Thursday at 9 a.m. at 100 Ridley Avenue.
