Ten wrestling teams will be fighting for two state spots on Saturday during the Area 2-AA duals at Callaway.

The host Cavaliers are hoping to be one of those teams, and head coach Jason Boatman believes it is a realistic goal.

“We said at the beginning of the year, let’s give ourselves and opportunity,” Boatman said. “A

Just keep trying to get better, and I think we’ve done that. We’re still real young in some spots, but they’ve learned a lot, and they’ve grown throughout the year. So if we wrestle as hard as we can, and get everything we’ve got out of everybody, who knows, we might be able to surprise some people.”

Joining Callaway in the tournament will be Spencer, Jordan, Dodge County, Lamar County, Dublin, Washington County, East Laurens, Northeast Macon and Monticello.

It will be a bracket format, with the top two seeds getting a first-round bye.

“It’s exciting,” Boatman said. “We want to accomplish something we’ve never gotten to accomplish before.

“And it’s finally here. So we get to try to deliver on that and see what happens.”

Last week, Callaway competed in the Gary Silva Invitational, and five members of the team placed fourth or higher.

Justin Kiss won his second tournament of the season, Anthony Elliott placed second, LaQuize Gilbert was third, and Austin Thomas and Matthew Wingate were fourth.

“Our effort has been really good,” Boatman said. “Last week at the Gary Silva, I was very pleased with the effort. If we get that kind of effort, I’ll be pleased either way.”

nd that started with filling the weight classes up, and then just keep trying to get better each and every practice.
