It’s the end of the road for the girls’ basketball teams from Callaway and LaGrange.
Both teams were on the road on Wednesday as they looked to reach the quarterfinals of the state tournament, but they both came up short.
LaGrange, facing Marist in a rematch of a first-round game from a year ago, lost 59-48.
Callaway, which reached the second round thanks to last week’s come-from-behind win over South Atlanta, fell to Model 71-25 in Rome.
LaGrange beat Marist 46-43 in the first round of the state tournament last season, and they both won last week to force a rematch.
LaGrange got off to a nice start and led 18-17 after the opening quarter, but Marist was ahead 37-24 at the half.
The second quarter was a struggle for the Lady Grangers, who were outscored 20-7.
LaGrange rallied in the third quarter, and Marist’s lead was down to 46-40 heading to the final period.
LaGrange (19-10) stayed within shouting distance in the final quarter, but it was Marist hanging on for the win.
It was the final game for LaGrange’s three outstanding seniors, Aryan Dozier, Chnaireia Strozier and Shaq Sutton.
Callaway was unable to keep pace with a strong Model team.
The Lady Cavaliers trailed 21-10 after the first quarter, and they were outscored 19-0 in the second quarter to fall behind 40-10 at the half.
The story was much the same in the second half as Callaway was unable to make a charge.
It was the last high-school game for Chyna Cameron, who was Callaway’s leading scorer this season.
Every other player will return for a Callaway team that finished second in Region 5-AA before winning its first state-tournament game in 15 years.
