It was an easy night at the office for the Callaway Lady Cavaliers, who scored five goals in each half on the way to a 10-0 Region 5-AA victory over visiting Spencer on Monday.

Callaway improved to 4-1 in the region and remained in second place behind unbeaten Lamar County while finishing a season sweep of Spencer.

The Lady Cavaliers have three region games remaining as they look to finish first or second and earn a home game for the opening round of the state playoffs.

Callaway and Spencer were playing for the second time in four days.

On Friday in Columbus, it was a bit of a struggle for Callaway, which won 5-1.

“It was an off game for us,” Callaway head coach Shonna Yawn said. “Sometimes we have them.”

The Lady Cavaliers were on top of their game in the rematch.

Callaway surged to a 5-0 halftime lead, and it added another five goals in the second half in a game that finished a few minutes early because of the mercy rule.

“Tonight, we were fresh, and we definitely looked like the team we can be.” Yawn said.

Kelly Carlisle had a big game for Callaway with five goals, and sophomore Cheney Eubanks added two goals.

While Carlisle is Callaway’s leading scorer, Eubanks has stepped up and found the goal with regularity this season as well.

With so many seniors set to graduate following this season, Eubanks will be one of the leaders next season.

“That’s what I try to explain to a lot of them, that you’re the future of the team,” Yawn said.

Amiya McCurty, Chloe McGuffin and Ashley Bowden had one goal apiece.

Marlowe VanSant had the shutout in goal for Callaway.

Callaway will host Westlake in a non-region game on Thursday at 6 p.m.
