MANCHESTER – The Callaway Cavaliers took a break from region play and got a 5-3 road win over the Manchester Blue Devils on Wednesday.

The Cavaliers scored all five of their runs in the first two innings, and that was enough support for a trio of pitchers.

Brooks Bledsoe got the start and pitched four innings, and Jabari Smith and Wesley Marchman finished things off on the mound.

“They did what we needed them to do,” Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard said of the pitchers. “They threw it over the plate, and gave us a chance to win.”

Early on, it looked like Callaway was going to steamroll Manchester.

After scoring a single run in the first inning, the Cavaliers scored four more runs in the second inning.

Callaway was held scoreless the rest of the way, and Manchester hung around and had a chance to win.

While pleased with the offensive execution early, Hubbard felt the hitters got a little pull happy as the game went along.

“I felt like we got out of our approach, and didn’t do a good job of taking it over the middle of the field,” Hubbard said. “The first two innings, three of our four hits were to the middle of the field. Then all of the sudden, our whole approach changed.”

In the first inning, Drake Wade led off with a single, and he later scored on a Chandler Lott hit.

In the second inning, Destin Patrick and Bledsoe got things started with singles, and Wade reached on an infield hit to load the bases.

Trent Sheppard was hit by a pitch to drive in a run, and Lott followed with a three-run double to push the lead to 5-1.

Manchester scored single runs in the fourth and seventh innings to get closer.

Callaway will return to region play on Friday with a home doubleheader against Temple beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Callaway beat Temple 13-2 on Tuesday.
