A year ago, the Callaway Lady Cavaliers beat Rockmart for the first state-playoff win in the history of the school’s soccer program.
On Friday evening, Callaway was looking for more state success as it hosted South Atlanta in the first round of the Class AA playoffs.
Callaway took control from the get-go, and it rolled to a 10-1 victory to earn a state win for the second straight season.
Callaway advances to face Model in the second round, and that game will be played on Tuesday in Rome.
While happy to see her team get another state win, Callaway coach Shonna Yawn let the players know the task gets a lot more difficult from here on out.
“I let them know you deserve this one after the season you’ve had,” Yawn said. “But the next game, you’re going to have to earn it.”
Yawn was happy with the way her team played against an overmatched South Atlanta team.
It helped that Callaway was as healthy as its been all season.
“We came out tonight, and played one of the best looking games we’ve had,” Yawn said. “We looked healthy, and that’s a good thing. And it was definitely an advantage not playing in the rain yesterday.”
Chloe McGuffin, a part of Callaway’s talented senior class, led the way with four goals.
Fellow senior Kelly Carlisle, Callaway’s leading scorer this season, had a hat trick with three goals.
Cheney Eubanks chipped in with two goals, and Alyssa Niner had one goal.
Carlisle, Eubanks, Amiya McCurty and McGuffin each had two assists, and Ashley Bowden had one assist.
Marlow Van Sant and Niner split time in goal.
Van Sant had two saves and didn’t allow a goal, and Niner had three saves.
