Callaway relay teams shine at sectional

CALHOUN – Callaway’s relay teams showed off their speed on Saturday to qualify for the state track-and-field finals.

One of two Class AA state sectionals was held in Calhoun on Saturday, and members of Callaway’s boys’ and girls’ teams were participating.

The top eight finishers in each event qualified for the state finals that will be held in May.

Both of Callaway’s 400-meter relay teams are going to state thanks to their strong showings on Saturday.

Callaway’s boys’ relay team consisting of Tely Fanning, Curmondre Bray, DJ Atkins and Cartavious Bigsby finished third with a time of 43.40 seconds.

On the girls’ side, Taghaza Lindsey, Aniyah Simpson, Leijorey Sanders and Trinity Hill place fourth with a time of 51.40 seconds.

On the individual side, Aniyah Simpson was third in the 400-meter run (1:01), Curmondre Bray was seventh in the 200-meter dash (22.92 seconds), and Darrick Williams was eighth in the 100-meter dash.

DJ Atkins participated in the 100-meter dash and finished 10th, DeAsia Hill was 11th in the 100-meter hurdles, Trinity Hill was 16th in the 100, and a second Callaway 400-meter boys’ relay team of DQ Wilkerson, Eric Hines, Courtney Williams and Kobe Jackson was ninth.

The state finals will be held from May 10-12 in Albany, Carrollton and Rome.

Callaway’s runners will be at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.
