Candidate forums important for the community

As you are probably aware, the election season is underway in Troup County. Early voting started Monday and will end May 18. The day of the election is May 22.

Georgia State Senate district 29, House of Representatives district 133, Troup County Board of Commissioners and seats on the Troup County School Board are up for the election.

On Monday night, the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce held a candidate forum for the commissioner and school board candidates.

The forum for candidates running for state house and state senate was held Tuesday night.

We think it’s great that the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce holds these forums for candidates to share their opinions and plans for policies on local issues. The forums help locals find out who the candidates are, so they can make an informed decision before voting.

At the forum, the candidates answer questions and cannot debate with their opponents.  Instead of having candidates go back and forth in a debate without having the chance to learn what they believe, the forum makes the process more straight forward.

Additionally, we would like to commend the candidates for putting themselves out there.

The candidates do not know what questions are coming and have to give their answers quickly on complicated issues that in some cases have gone on in the area for years.

The forums are not any easy and the candidates should be applauded for discussing these issues on the spot.

We applaud the chamber for holding the forums. These forums are important  and help the community get informed.
