Mr. Artis Avery Brown

Artis Avery Brown, age 93, of LaGrange, passed away on May 2, 2018, at his residence.
He was born on Jan. 20, 1925, to the late James Avery Brown and Janie Hines Brown of LaGrange. At age 18, in 1943, he was drafted into the United States Navy where he served as a 1st Class Seaman on a destroyer escort ship the U.S.S. Carrol until the end of World War II, crossing the Atlantic Ocean 18 times during his tour of duty.
He owned and operated a grocery store and several other businesses in LaGrange throughout the following years. He was a former member of Western Heights Baptist Church, where he attended for 43 years and served as a deacon and treasurer. He and his wife, Gwinell, attended First Baptist Church on the Square and have done so for the past 20 plus years.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Gladys Green and Lottie Brown.
Survivors include his wife, Gwinell Taylor Brown; sons, Terry Brown, Russ Brown (Kristy); daughter, Patsy Brown McKay (Tony); grandchildren, Rusty Brown (Chesna), Ben Brown, Kimberly McKay Martin (Van), Pamela Holly KcKay; great grandchildren, Willow Lynn McDonald, Aubrey Brook Martin, Stella Harper Brown; extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday May 5, 2018, at the First Baptist Church on the Square with Pastor Cade Farris and the Rev. Paul Blair officiating.
Visitation will be held at the church starting at 11 a.m. until service hour at noon.
