Vandalism in Hogansville
Published 9:11 pm Monday, May 14, 2018
In today’s edition, we wrote about two hummingbird figurines that were damaged in Hogansville sometime after 1 a.m. on Saturday.
The hummingbirds were made of fiberglass and were along the Tower Trail. Both received significant damage and will have to be repaired before being replaced. Even if the hummingbirds — which cost around $1,300 apiece — are replaced, it’s possible that they’ll be moved to another location where there’s more security.
The fact that hummingbird figurines need to be guarded by extra security says a lot about the state of the world in 2018, a conversation we’ll save for another time. For now, the focus should be on finding those responsible.
The Hogansville Police Department continues to look into the crime, but it is relying on the community of more information.
It’s clear that this is vandalism to city property and the perpetrator should be justly punished. We urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward. Our hope is that the hummingbirds can be repaired and replaced with minimal cost to the city. Right now, it’s hard to say what the final cost would be, especially when you add in the time spent discussing where to place them in the future.
The plan was to place around 15 hummingbirds in total around the city at some point. They are a great way to advertise the annual Hummingbird Festival and add some art to downtown.
We hope that whoever is responsible for damaging these figurines will come forward. It would be the right thing to do.
