After six months, it is clear that tax reform is working for the American people. Since President Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act into law in December, we have seen Americans reap the benefits of a growing economy.
Thanks to our pro-growth agenda to reform our outdated tax code and roll back burdensome regulations, the American economy is back on track.
The numbers alone paint a picture of an economy that is finally, truly recovering. Since tax reform was enacted, over one million jobs have been created. Unemployment is at an 18 year low and consumer confidence is at a 17 year high.
Now, there are naysayers who continue to claim that tax reform is not working for everyday Americans.
But behind each of these numbers is an individual, a family and a community that is reaping the benefits of more job opportunities, higher wages and better benefits.
That is why, I have championed other pro-growth policies like common-sense regulatory reform. In May, I voted to enact long overdue relief from the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, which the president quickly signed into law. This bill corrects the regulatory overswing that followed the financial crisis and gives community financial institutions the flexibility to once again invest in their neighbors.
As our communities and local economies spring back to life, it is important to remember that these successes are just the beginning.
There are still challenges we face to give every American the opportunity to take advantage of this thriving economy. We must align our education system with our workforce so the next generation is prepared for the jobs of tomorrow. As a member of the Education and the Workforce Committee, I have introduced and supported legislation that helps employers and educators build work-based learning programs that will allow our students to successfully enter the workforce.
I will continue to advocate for smart reforms to our welfare system to right this moral wrong and give folks the resources they need to move up the socioeconomic ladder.
These are certainly challenges, but, pro-growth policies like tax reform have given us a strong economic foundation to begin tackling these issues head on. Our economy is thriving, and we can, and will, continue to enact a common-sense agenda that gives everyone the opportunity to seize the American dream.
