Youth tournaments resume

It’s on to Cairo.

The Troup County 7-8-year-old all-stars enjoyed a command performance in the district tournament, rolling to a 4-0 record while outscoring their opponents 51-5.

Now, Troup County will look to keep the good times rolling in the Dixie Youth Baseball state tournament that begins today in Cairo.

Also this weekend, a pair of Troup County 9-10-year-old all-star teams will continue play in the district tournament in Thomaston.

The Troup County National 11-12-year-old all-stars, meanwhile, will be in Swainsboro next week for the state tournament after winning the district championship.

The 7-8-year-old district tournament was held in Manchester, and Troup American was dominant.

After winning its first three games with ease, Troup County beat Lamar County 11-1 to claim the district title.

Troup County will be one of 17 teams participating in the state tournament.

Those teams will be divided into four pools, and the pool winners will return to Cairo next week to determine the state champion.

Troup County will play North Macon today at 6 p.m., and it will have two games on Saturday, one against Baconton at 10:15 a.m., and another against Jones County at 12:30 p.m.

Troup County finishes pool play with a game against North Macon on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

The state champion advances to the Dixie Youth Baseball World Series in Lumberton, N.C.

The 11-12-year-old double-elimination district tournament in Thomaston began last weekend, and Troup National went 2-0, while Troup American was 1-1.

The two local teams faced off in a winner’s bracket game, with Troup National rallying for a 12-11 victory after falling behind 9-1.

In today’s games, Troup National will try to move a step closer to a district title, while Troup American needs a win to avoid elimination.

Troup National will play Thomaston at 6 p.m., and Troup American will take on Taylor County at 8 p.m.

The tournament continues on Saturday, and the championship game is Sunday.

The top two finishers advance to the state tournament in Manchester.

The Troup National 11-12-year-old all-stars will be in Swainsboro on Friday for the start of the state tournament.

The eight teams will be divided into two four-team pools.

The top two teams from each pool will return to Cairo the following week for a double-elimination tournament to determine the state champion.

Troup County opens state play on July 6 with a game against Irwin County at 6 p.m.

Troup plays twice on Saturday, first against Wrens at 11 a.m., and then against Thomaston at 6:30 p.m.
