They’re the champs.
The CHATA 18-and-over women’s tennis team overcame the heat, and a tough opponent from Sequoyah, to win the title at the USTA tri-level state tournament on Sunday afternoon at McCluskey Tennis Center.
In the championship match, which started at 12:30 p.m. with the blazing sun shining down, each team sent three doubles teams onto the court to decide the title.
The doubles matches featured teams with three different USTA ratings.
There was a 2.5 match, a 3.0 match, and a 3.5 match.
After Dana Davis and Tracy Stribling won the 3.5 match, CHATA only needed one more victory to secure the title.
Sisters Katie Willis and Suzie Cook provided the decisive point when they won in straight sets at 2.5.
The team featured 17 players, all of whom participated in at least one of the matches during the weekend.
Next up for the team will be the tri-level regional tournament in Jackson, Miss. in October.
A handful of state titles were determined during the three-day tournament that featured more than 600 players.
Matches were played at McCluskey Tennis Center, LaGrange College, and Callaway High.
