LaGrange’s softball team is off to a quick start with six wins in seven games, while Troup has struggled to a 2-6 record.

Both of those teams will in essence be starting over today, though, when they open their Region 5-AAAA schedules.

LaGrange visits Cedartown in a rematch of a region-tournament series from a year ago, while Troup will host Sandy Creek.

Troup and LaGrange were supposed to begin region play last week, but the games were rained out.

The rain-out may have been a break for LaGrange, which has been dealing some injuries, including one to staff ace Camden Smith.

Had LaGrange played Central-Carroll last week, Smith would have been unable to go, but the sophomore pitched in a pair of games in the Callaway Classic last weekend.

“I was kind of glad (the game got rained out),” said LaGrange head coach Gabby Heath, whose team is 6-1. “People are getting healed.”

Troup has beaten Woodward Academy and North Murray, but it has dropped its other six games.

None of that matters today, though, as Troup looks to begin its region schedule with a win.

“Hopefully we’ll make a big statement in our first region game,” Troup head coach Kayla Yeargin said.

Troup continues its region schedule on Saturday with a doubleheader at Cartersville. LaGrange finishes its week with a non-region game at Bowdon on Wednesday.

Callaway, meanwhile, will play two more games before beginning its Region 5-AA schedule.

Callaway has road games against Upson-Lee today and Bowdon on Aug. 20 before beginning region play on Aug. 21 against Jordan.
