The Callaway Lady Cavaliers jumped into region play in style with a 16-0 victory over visiting Jordan on Tuesday.

Callaway (5-6 overall) scored 10 runs in the first inning, and it added six more runs in the bottom of the second

The game ended in the third inning because of the run rule.

“We’ve been working on our hitting,” said senior Oeisha Jenkins, who had an RBI double in the first inning. “She wasn’t the best pitcher, but the work we put in paid off. We have to stay on top of it.”

Jenkins also got the job done on the pitcher’s mound, throwing the three-inning no-hitter.

Jenkins hit a batter in the third inning, but otherwise she was perfect, and she struck out eight of the 10 batters she faced.

Jenkins was a key player for the 2017 Callaway team that finished third in Region 5-AA before winning the first state-playoff series in the history of the program.

Jenkins has confidence that this team could do some special things as well.

“This year, I feel like we have a lot of potential,” Jenkins said. “I feel like we can farther than we did last year.”

One of the newcomers to the lineup, freshman Alora Vetsavong, believes a challenging early-season schedule has Callaway prepared to take on its region opponents.

“It really showed how much we could do going up against those teams, how hard we can work,” she said. “I feel like this year we’ll do great in our region games.”

In Tuesday’s game, after Jenkins struck out the side in the top of the first, Callaway went to work in the bottom of the inning.

After Leijorey Sanders and Vetsavong walked, Jenkins drove in a pair of runs with a double.

Lindsay Cofield and Alexus Furgerson had back-to-back RBI singles later in the inning, and Aaliyah Morman added an RBI double.

In the second inning, Lydia Bartlett had a two-run single, Furgerson knocked in a run with a base hit, and Vetsavong and Jenkins walked with the bases loaded to drive in runs.

Sanders walked three times and scored three runs from the top of the order.

Vetsavong had a base hit and two walks and she also scored three runs, and Jenkins had a double and a walk with three RBIs.

Kourtney Grier had a double and a single, Bartlett had a base hit and a walk, Natalee Waddell had a single, Cofield and Furgerson each had two hits, and Morman had a double.

Callaway will step out of region play on Thursday for a home game against Upson-Lee.
