Support great causes in our community

A common complaint in a city as active as LaGrange is that there are just too many good causes to pick just one to support, which is why it’s sometimes nice to focus on a group that supports a wide array of great, local causes.
On Thursday, we wrote about United Way of West Georgia’s fundraising campaign kickoff and this year’s goal of raising $1,002,018 for local charities. That is $1,002,018 that can go to partner agencies like Active Life centers in LaGrange and Hogansville, Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children, Camp Viola, the Salvation Army and Self Help Harbor, to name a few.
We feel that it is not a stretch to say that most people who have lived in Troup County for more than a few years have either personally benefited from at least one of these programs or have a loved one who has benefited from one of these programs. That it why it is so important to support the work of the United Way in our community.
These funds go to the people who need it most, whether that is programing for children, senior citizens, those with intellectual disabilities (Special Olympics) and those in crisis (Harmony House).
If there is one cause that you strongly support, then we encourage you to give your time or donations there as you are able. However, if you face that dreaded analysis paralysis and find yourself unsure of how to help, giving to the United Way is a good way to back a variety of causes that benefit the entire community in the long run.
Don’t fall into the trap of doing nothing for fear of doing the wrong thing. Donate what you can — time or money. You’ll be glad you did.
