Callaway eases to road win

COLUMBUS – Callaway’s softball team evened its Region 5-AA record at 3-3 with a 16-2 road win over Jordan on Thursday.

Callaway took control with nine runs in the first inning, and the game ended after five innings because of the run rule.

Jasmine Dukes was Callaway’s starting and winning pitcher, and Lexi Furgerson pitched in the final inning.

Dukes was Callaway’s leadoff hitter, and she was on base three times with a pair of doubles.

Oeisha Jenkins had three hits and was hit by a pitch, Lydia Bartlett and Kourtney Grier each had two hits, and Alora Vetsavong and Lindsay Cofield each had a hit.

Natalee Waddell was on base twice with two runs scored.

Furgerson was hit by a pitch twice and she scored a pair of runs.

Callaway will host region foe Lamar County on Tuesday.

CROSS COUNTRY: Callaway’s girls’ team won a meet that was held at Lafayette Christian School on Thursday, while Jordan won the boys’ competition.

The top local finisher in the girls’ race was Troup’s Amanda McCarthy, who was third with a time of 28 minutes, 14 seconds.

Heritage’s Sovi Wellons (21:13) finished first.

On the boys’ side, LaGrange’s John McDonald (19:57) was the fastest local runner, and he helped his team finish second overall.

Koby Lord (18:45) of Heritage finished first.
