Local student on Good Morning America

Troup County High School senior Harrison Lawson was one of four high school students from across the country featured on ABC’s Good Morning America earlier this week.

The students were asked to give their viewpoint on what teenagers thought about the Brett Kavanaugh allegations. Kavanaugh, the Supreme Court nominee, has denied allegations of sexual assault that allegedly occurred during his high school and college days. Kavanaugh testified at a confirmation hearing Thursday afternoon.

“I think once you’re 17, or at least in high school, there’s a certain level of self-control and understanding of what is right and wrong that everyone just kind of has,” Lawson said as part of the GMA story.

Lawson served as a Senate Page last year in Washington D.C., and connections he made there allowed him the chance to be a part of the GMA story. During his time at a Senate page, he met Brennan Leach, communications director of the High School Democrats of America. Leach asked if he’d like to voice his opinion for the story.

“I was on the way to a National High School induction, and she called me right before I walked into it,” Lawson said. “Originally, my plans were to go to Troup Youth Leadership right after the NHS meeting.”

Instead, Lawson cancelled his plans and found himself in front of a computer screen, doing an interview on one of the biggest stories nationally. He said some of the 1,100 comments on the video tried to make the story political, but he didn’t feel that was the point of the story.

“In my opinion, the intention of the article and video was to show if teenagers are talking about it in general, and not anything overtly political in itself,” Lawson said.

Lawson plans to study public policy, international affairs or journalism in college. He plans to attend Georgia, if his dream choice of Dartmouth doesn’t work out. He said the interview with GMA showed him where he can still grow in front of the camera.

“I looked at it as a Baptism by fire because I only found out an hour beforehand I was even doing the interview and had to do it all off the cuff. I actually enjoyed it.”

Lawson is the son of Shannon and Jonathan Lawson.
