The LaGrange College Panthers will be at home today as they look for their first USA South win of the season.
LaGrange College (1-3 overall), which fell to North Carolina Wesleyan last weekend in its USA South opener, will host an Averett (Va.) team that thumped Greensboro 54-0 in its first conference game.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Callaway Stadium.
After beating Apprentice 42-13 two weeks ago, LaGrange College traveled to North Carolina hoping to open conference play in winning fashion.
The day belonged to North Carolina Wesleyan, though, which scored the first 35 points on the way to a 35-14 victory.
Both of the Panthers’ touchdowns came in the fourth quarter with freshman quarterback Cam Perkins in the game.
Perkins had a 12-yard touchdown run, and he threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Austin Sapp.
Perkins completed 7-of-10 passes for 95 yards with the touchdown, and starting quarterback Kelly Hall was 10-of-17 for 91 yards with a pair of interceptions.
Senior wide receiver Marcus Campbell was the favorite target of both quarterbacks with seven catches for 103 yards.
Perkins led the Panthers’ rushing attack with 61 yards on six carries, and Drew Lewiski ran for 28 yards.
Even though he has only played in two of the Panthers’ four games, Perkins is the team’s leading rusher with 149 yards on 13 attempts.
Hall, who has started all four games, has thrown for 865 yards with six touchdowns.
Averett had no trouble with Greensboro.
Jacob Wright completed 12-of-18 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns, and Averett ran for 193 yards.
N.C. Wesleyan finished with 518 yards of offense, and that included an impressive 299 yards on the ground.
