Two men robbed the Summit gas station on Vernon Road Sunday, telling the store clerk they had bills to pay.

According to a LaGrange Police Department press release, two black males entered the station at 4:08 a.m. wearing masks and demanded money from the clerk. The Summit gas station is located at 208 Vernon Road.

The clerk turned over an undisclosed amount of money and both suspects fled on foot, according to the press release. Sgt. Robert Kirby with the LPD said the men did not brandish a weapon during the robbery.

Kirby said the LPD usually sees an increase in robberies this time of year, but robbery incidents are down 30 percent this year when compared to 2017.

“This time of year we generally see an uptick in those types of incidents, from Thanksgiving to Christmas and maybe even a few days after Christmas we see an uptick in robberies,” Kirby said.

Kirby said the LPD recommends stores keep their front windows clear and have surveillance equipment. He also said if an armed robbery does occur it’s best to give the suspects what they want.

“The best thing to do is to give them what they are asking for,” Kirby said. “Don’t try to be a hero. People get hurt that way.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the LaGrange Police Department at (706) 883-2603. The LPD expected to release video footage on its Facebook page Monday afternoon.
