The Callaway Lady Cavaliers finished with a flourish.

Facing the visiting Valley Lady Rams on Saturday, Callaway outscored Valley 25-8 in the fourth quarter to secure a 60-44 win.

Callaway hadn’t scored more than 14 points in a quarter before exploding for 25 points in the game’s final eight minutes.

“It was better execution, better shot selection,” Callaway head coach Deyano Martin said. “We went to the basket.”

Leading the way for Callaway was Gabrielle Johnson, who has enjoyed an outstanding freshman season.

Johnson paced Callaway with 23 points, and she had 12 points during the decisive fourth quarter.

“She plays hard,” Martin said. “She never stops moving.”

Jasmine Dukes added 10 points, and Qua Beasley and Kierra Jackson each had eight points.

Beasley scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter when she made a pair of 3-pointers.

In Saturday’s boys’ game, it was Valley surging from behind to dispatch Callaway 67-63.

The Cavaliers appeared to have things in control after taking a 13-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Rams came charging back.

With 2:10 to play, Kintavious Dozier connected on a 3-pointer to put the Rams on top 62-61, and they led the rest of the way.

Demetrius Coleman led Callaway with 16 points, JaVontay Boddie added 14 points, and Duke Simpson scored 12 points.

Callaway’s teams will be at home today for a Region 5-AA doubleheader against Temple.
