It’s decision day for the Callaway Cavaliers.
Callaway’s wrestling team, coming off a strong showing in the Callaway Classic last weekend, will participate in the Area 5-AA duals today at Bremen.
It’ll be a six-team field with Callaway, Heard County, Bremen, Temple McNair and Therrell.
The top two finishers will advance to the Class AA state duals next week.
“We had a great week of practice,” Callaway head coach Jason Boatman said. “They’ve been dialed in, and they seem really excited and focused for tomorrow. That’s what we told them, just go out and leave it all out there, and the chips will fall where they will. Just give it everything you’ve got.”
Callaway heads into the area duals after finishing second in the Callaway Classic.
Callaway won its five-team pool before losing a hard-fought showdown with LaGrange in the championship match.
It was tied late, but Callaway had to forfeit the final two matches, and it lost 48-36.
One of Callaway’s wins was against Heard County, and that was big since they could face off in today’s area duals.
Callaway also beat Upson-Lee, Landmark Christian and Bowdon before falling to LaGrange.
As has been the case consistently throughout the season, Callaway was led by Laquize Gilbert and Anthony Elliott, who each went 5-0.
Gilbert and Elliott both won individual championships in the Gary Silva Invitational inDecember.
Korbin Browning, Ladarious Williams, Jakwan Nunley, Curmondre Bray and Jared Nation each went 4-1, and Cameron Key won three matches.
No matter what happens today, Callaway still has plenty of season remaining.
Callaway will host the county championship on Jan. 22, with LaGrange and Troup also participating.
After competing in the Bowdon Invitational, Callaway will participate in the traditional area tournament on Feb. 2.
The top finishers at the area tournament advance to the state sectional, and the season ends with the state finals in Macon.
